While cleaning wristwatches is best possible by a practiced person, you can manage it at home if you enjoy tinkering with mechanical things .You might not want to do this at first on a pricey or a dear wristwatch which you love, as you will most likely mess up the first watch you work on. Get a cheap one to practice on till you get perfect.
To start with, make sure you have a place to work. A large table that is empty will do well, or it would be even more perfect if you have a proper workstation in your garage where you can work undisturbed. Add a white sheet on top of the table before beginning, as this will not only make it easier to see the tiny bits and pieces, but will also prevent parts from bouncing off the table when dropped.
Most of all, you will need exceptional lighting where you work. You should also have a lamp, (fluorescent would be best to the table so you can get some straight light. The next thing you need is a good quality screwdriver set. Make sure you get a desirable quality set since this will not break the screws on the watch.
In addition, you will also require a dish to keep all the parts you take out of the watch on. It would be best if this has sections fabricated inside it, and as you strip the watch begin putting the pieces from right to left so you don't get puzzled afterwords. An additional thing you require is a good pair of tweezers. This will be essential to manage the small parts, and ensure you fit them back into the watch perfectly.
You will also need cleaning supplies. If you are serious about this hobby, you can buy proper ultrasonic parts cleaners from online, but in the start you can just use Naphtha. This is the ingredient that makes up lighter fluids, and evaporates fast without leaving a residue. Pour a very small amount in a cup and then soak all the parts in this for a few minutes.
Then, you have to take a small brush, paintbrush, or makeup brush, and brush the parts and then eliminate them from the fluid and place them on a towel or filter paper to dry them out.
You will also require oil, like Moebius to oil the watch sections. To apply this, you require an oiler which is a thin wire having a flat end. To be able to glimpse what you are doing, you will also call for a magnifying glass. Purchase a blower to help you take away dust from parts, and obtain a hands remover to correctly eliminate and fix back the posts while you are cleaning it.
To commence, remove the back of the watch and open it up. After this, you need to let down the mainspring which is what allows the watch to work. The next thing to exterminate is the movement, followed by the hands and the dial in the end. Keep removing the parts till you are left with the frame of the watch in your hand.
